COMPOSER
Jes Raymond is a singer, songwriter, and composer based in Wilder, Vermont. She spent a decade touring nationally out of the Pacific Northwest with The Blackberry Bushes Stringband, playing festivals, theaters, and listening rooms across the country, and released 5 albums with that band. When she moved across the country from Seattle to her hometown in Vermont, The Blackberry Bushes shape-shifted into BEECHARMER, her current Americana project with her husband and longtime bandmate Jakob Breitbach on fiddle. They have distilled those 10 years on the road into a sound that is equal parts summer jubilee and windy mountaintop.
A moving and skillful singer, flatpicking guitarist, and melodic clawhammer banjoist, her songs seek the ecstatic in the ordinary and the mystic in the day-to-day. She draws from the deep well of American Roots music, then mixes it with a sincere pursuit of honesty, illumination, and attention.
“I want my songs to help us connect with the deeper stories. I want my songs to feel like sleeping under the stars, dancing, kissing, and getting a second chance. I want to name the ache. I want to give people a reason to sing and a reason to move. I want you to know without a doubt that you have a comrade in wonder, that magic believes in you, and you are easy to love. ”
THESE MOUNTAINS SING
The Covid 19 pandemic made it fearfully clear how damaging isolation is for musicians, but rural artists face this obstacle even without mandated social distancing. In this project, funded by The Vermont Arts Council and The National Endowment for the Arts, Jes’ arrangement of her song “Together” was brought to life by more than 30 artists who lent their voices and talents to the collaboration from all across the state. In a time when identity can be used as a weapon to divide us, we attempted to redraw the lines of culture around a shared allegiance to the natural world, and to the multitudes of humans who love to sing.
